Tasmania!

If you’re following me on Instagram, (and if you not, you definitely should) you’ll have noticed that Jamie & I took a visit to Tasmania over the weekend. With Anzac Day on Monday 25th we thought it was the perfect opportunity to visit the little island south of Melbourne.

We had heard so much about Tasmania since we first arrived in Melbourne (almost four months ago now!) and we were just waiting for the perfect opportunity and indeed that time came. So a couple of weeks ago I was searching online on many booking engines and came across a good deal (on eBookers) for flights and accommodation for two of us for $500/€338. We quickly purchased and no sooner were we packing our bags on Friday night, last, in preparation for our morning flight on Saturday.

I couldn’t wait to get there and it did not disappoint. It is one of THE most beautiful and picturesque places I have ever been to. I guess in one way it reminded us of home in that, it was a little colder (as in really bloody cold!), quite mountainous and again some beautiful views.

All ready to board and the view as we came in to Tasmania

We arrived in to the centre of Hobart around noon however we were too early to check in to our hotel, The Brunswich Hotel, so we ventured off to explore the town. We stopped off at the Salamanca Market, a street market and major tourist attraction in the town centre. We were very lucky in that the market only takes place on a Saturday so we ate lots of pizza, hot dogs, cinnamon doughnuts, and had pletny coffee…. Ugh just too much! But it was beautiful and got some great shots too on my camera!

In the afternoon we hopped on a boat and sailed on up to Mona (Museum of Old and New Art) displaying quite controversial pieces of art but well worth a trip!

Entering the MONA Gallery (it's like something out of James Bond!)

I had booked a day tour with Tours Tasmania for the Sunday which lasted about 11-12 hours. It cost us $130/each, which seemed a little steep initially however we were absolutely delighted with the tour. Our tour guide was just so knowledgeable and passionate about Tasmania. We got collected about 7.15am and dropped back about 6.30pm. We visited the National Park where we took a small stroll (c. 3km) through a lovely walking trail with some exceptional view-points, from there we made our way to Port Arthur, but stopped off for an hour to see the Tasmanian Devil at the Unzoo, The little devils are just amazing, at one point they were cuddling each other and the next they were fighting each other for pieces of meat being fed to them!

Beautiful Port Arthur - just look at that blue sky!

Exploring the site

From there we were brought to Port Arthur to join a walking tour, then a cruise about the little harbour and finally made our way back to the Hobart via the little old town of Richmond. Such a beautiful spot, Jamie & I couldn’t believe how much it resembled England/Ireland.

That evening we got some fish & chips from down at the pier and ate them looking out at the water. It really was a lovely weekend!

All the best

Jean
