As you will note from the title and also our Sydney post, we are doing things lately 'on a budget'. Funds aren't as plentiful as we had thought, don't get me wrong we are still enjoying our time here, doing all the things we want to do, I guess just noting our spending a little more.
While we were in Sydney we did splash out a little in terms of eating out and although the meals weren't exactly anything amazing, eating out was always going to cost more. Therefore since arriving in Byron Bay we've been buying our groceries from the local Aldi and cooking up a storm in the hostel kitchen, saving heaps and putting that extra money towards activities in the bay. Saying that most of what we have already done is free anyway.

Wrecked after our walk in heat. I'm so bloody unfit lads!
For example, we took a walk to the nearby Cape Byron Lighthouse which is the most easterly point of Australia! We borrowed bicycles (for free) from the hostel, cycled most of the route and then walked up the last stretch to the lighthouse itself. What a spectacular view! It was absolutely worth the walk in the sweltering heat....just remember to bring water folks, it's a steep climb and with taking just over an hour to complete you will need something to quench the thirst. And of course depending on the weather, we'd also recommend sunscreen. There is a cafe at the top, although I can only assume they charge extortionate prices for their drinks, like that soft drink in Sydney you'll remember I spoke about in our Sydney post!
There are boards also available from the hostel for free which we plan on taking out at some point and there's also regular evening entertainment including fire dancers and even an outdoor cinema. Last night we watched 300, not my kind of movie but I really enjoyed it. That paired with the idea of sitting on a beanbag looking at the stars (and the movie!) is pretty cool too.
We don't leave for the Gold Coast until Sunday but we are thoroughly enjoying our time in Byron Bay so far and it ain't costing a fortune either. At present our budget is $70/each/day however we are coming in a good bit under everyday, we might even take a surf lesson tomorrow with all the monies we're saving.
That's it for now folks - until next time!
